Senior lecturer in Music and founder of the International Bagpipe Organisation, Dr Cassandre Balosso-Bardin will introduce you to the world of bagpipes. Did you know that there were over 130 different kinds of bagpipes in the world, from India to Ireland? Did you know that they already existed 2000 years ago in Roman antiquity and that they only came to Scotland quite late? Do you know that in Italy, bagpipes are a typical Christmas instrument? This session will give you a taste of the different kinds of music you will encounter throughout your degree, expanding your sound map and opening you to a world of new and wonderful music.

Workshop 4

Title: Teaching Music

Duration: 1 hour

Description:

In this online session, we will look ahead to our popular ‘Teaching Music’ module that forms part of our degree. Some of you will know that teaching is what you want to do in the future – we’ve all been inspired by great music teachers at school. Others of you will be thinking that you might want to do this one day, and you’re interested in teaching your instrument as part of your future career as a performer. This taster session will start with us meeting as a group to identify one thing (from lots of things) we are each especially good at. Then we will set you a challenge to prepare a short lesson for the rest of the group that teaches us something about that. We will explore setting a learning objective, different ways we like to learn and how we assess what has been learned.

Workshop 5

Title: Music and emotion

Duration: (1 hour)

Description:

Emotional responses to music: Individual or universal? Music has the ability to induce emotional responses in listeners, from tears to goosebumps to standing ovations. People regularly select mood-congruent music to reinforce how they feel, or to elicit a particular feeling or behaviour in others. But what is it about music that makes it emotive? How do we capture that experience? And is music a universal language, or something much more nuanced? This workshop will interactively explore these questions, looking at the musical features that composers and musicians have been using to evoke emotion through their music.
